Description Infantry Officer's Sword 1821-1840; straight, single-edged blade with single broad fuller, etched with floral sprays U.S. eagle, military trophies, leather cushion; brass hilt of shallow reverse P configuration; center of knuckle bow decorated with five balls, eagle head pommel, reeded bone grip, brass ferrule, quillon terminates in disk. Brass scabbard (.779a) with two suspension ring and small drag.

Event Battle of Cross Keys
Provenance 1st Lt. Samuel Paul used this sword and scabbard during the war. He was wounded at the Battle of Cross Keys, having his leg shattered by a piece of shell. His foot was subsequently amputated. He was absent wounded through April 1863, and was then detailed as an enrolling officer in Augusta County for the rest of 1863. He was elected sheriff of Augusta ounty in 1864 and resigned 1/27/1864.
