Provenance The coin is an 1861 United States silver quarter, Philadelphia mint. In 1861, 4.86 million silver quarters were struck. In 1861, coins were hoarded in both North and South, virtually ceasing to circulate. Both sides made do with paper currency. The Confederate government was unable to produce any coins, and US coins continued to circulate in the South with a substantial premium in paper money.
