Provenance Hat with a bullet hole and bloodstain worn by Edwin Calhoun of Abbeville, South Carolina, when he was wounded during the cavalry battle at Trevillian's Station on June 12, 1864.

Calhoun was looking down into his cartridge box when struck by a bullet in his left temple, which lodged in the roof of his mouth. He was taken by train to Charlottesville, where he remained for about five weeks before receiving a furlough home in South Carolina; while in Charlottesville, he realized he was blind in his left eye. He remained at home until October 1864, when he traveled to Columbia to have the ball removed from his wound. A Dr. Chisholm performed the operation; Calhoun later narrated, "he did not wish to make a cavity in my mouth and tried to force the ball down my throat; but instead of going that way, it lodged in a cavity in my cheek. I returned home and after a time the ball worked back to the roof of my mouth. I went to Dr. Chisholm again, and this time he was forced to make the cavity in the roof of my mouth to get the ball out. The hole is there today. When I was shot, the ball passed through the brim of my hat, carrying a piece of wool with it. Unknown to me or to the doctors, this piece of wool remained in my wound, irritating it and keeping it from healing. The only wonder is that I did not have blood poison. Sometime after the bullet had been removed, the wool worked to the hole and I pulled it out with my finger." He survived the wound, but was pronounced unfit for further service.
