Provenance The medal for gallantry at Leesburg, Virginia in 1861 was awarded to Brigadier General Nathan George Evans by the State of South Carolina. He was Colonel of the 4th South Carolina Infantry. His unit's victory at Ball's Bluff in October 1861 earned him a promotion to Brigadier General.
