Description U. S. Springfield percussion rifle musket, .58 caliber, single-shot muzzle loader, with a forty-inch barrel. It has three barrel bands with screw closures, iron mountings, steel ramrod, and walnut stock. This rifle musket matches the 1863 sub-pattern, except for the barrel and breech. Its hammer is missing. The lockplate is marked, "US 1864 Wm MUIR & CO WINDSOR LOCKS, CT." with an eagle.

Provenance The Springfield rifle musket came from the collection of Robert Henry Godsey (1834-1899) of Amelia Springs, Virginia. He enlisted in Co. G, 2nd Battalion Virginia Infantry on February 5, 1862.
