Description The badge consists of two parts - bar pin and ribbon with gold fringe. The bar pin more or less, elliptically shaped. It is made of brass with a celluloid center. The celluloid center has a white background with black letters which have shading to the left. The letters read, "TAR HEELS." The silk ribbon suspends from the bar pin and is rectangular in shape. The top portion of the ribbon is red with silver lettering which reads, "MAY 20, 1776 / [a 5-point star image] / MAY 20, 1861." A white and blue vertically striped ribbon is sewn to the bottom of the red one. The white and blue ribbon contains gold lettering which reads, "FIRST AT BETHEL'' (on the white) / "LAST AT APPOMATTOX" (on the blue) / "N. C. D. / U. C. V." (across the bottom of both colors). Gold thread fringe hangs from the bottom of the white and blue ribbon. The back of the badge rests against the backing of the frame and is therefore, not visible. This badge is part of a large framed collection (0985.7.135); the rest of the collection is enumerated separately (0985.7.135a- 0985.7.135b, 0985.7.135d-0985.7.135hh). The badge is located in the upper right quadrant of the frame.
