Provenance "Hat with five bullet holes through it worn by Capt. James F. Tucker. He enlisted before he was twenty-one and served throughout the war until wounded at Cold Harbor on June 3, 1864. This hat, which he wore in the service, has five bullet holes, one of which cut a furrow in his scalp, leaving a scar two inches long. This, with a scar on his thigh from a minie ball which severed the sciatic nerve, went with him to the grave, bespeaking the brave Confederate soldier that he was." (accession ledger)
