Description Child dress of white plain weave cotton calico with blue printed spools and layered sleeves with lace at each layer. Gathered V applied to center front of bodice with smocking stitches. Self corded pointed waist. 2 wide flat pleats around hem.The back of the dress has eight hooks and eye closures. The muslin lining is marked with various stampings (flour sack?) . Attached label: "80 years old, 1940".

Provenance Child's dress belonging to the Gooch family of Louisa County, Virginia. It probably originally belonged to Mary Evelina Toler Gooch (b. 1834); or her sisters, Martha "Mattie" F. Gooch Vaughan (b. 1837) or Elizabeth "Bettie" Pollard Gooch (b. 1839); or Mary's daughter, Susie Lightfoot Gooch (b. 1860).
