Description Model 1841 U.S. Naval Cutlass: straight, double-edged blade with shallow diamond cross-section; reverse ricasso stamped "USN / 184[8?] / WR"; brass hilt consisting of flat, wide guard tapering to form knuckle bow, forward swept quillon terminates in thick, flat disc stamped "WAF" on obverse and "[?O]P" on reverse; flattened ball pommel cast with American eagle and grip cast with overlapping scallop design. Leather scabbard (.817b) with belt loop held together with copper rivets. With belt (.817a) and cap pouch (.817c).

Provenance Willliam Peter Wyche took this naval cutlass from a Union officer aboard the USS Congress after the CSS Virginia forced it on the shoals and set it on fire during the naval engagement at Hampton Roads in 1862.
