The badge consists of two parts - brass and enamel pendant, and silk ribbon. The rectangular length of ribbon consists of a single white vertical stripe in the between two red vertical stripes. The ribbon contains no marks. A small metal ring hangs from the bottom of the ribbon and suspends the pendant. The pendant is square with a bubble crest on top. The crest has a light blue enamel background with "1861-1865" stenciled in the center. The body of the square is enameled as an Army of Northern Virginia pattern flag with a red background, blue St. Andrew's cross, and brass-colored stars. "A. N. V." is stenciled on the bottom quadrant of the flag. The back of the badge rests against the backing of the frame and is therefore, not visible. The badge is located in the lower left quadrant of the frame.
