Description Uniform Frock coat: double breasted, 7 buttons in each row, gray wool jean cloth with black cotton facings, brown wool and silk lining in body, white cotton sheeting in sleeves; gold braid first sergeant's chevrons on upper sleeves, local Confederate staff buttons with no backmarks. With pants and vest (.41a and b).

Provenance Uniform owned and worn by 1st Sergeant John Westley Lester. His mother, Amelia Barlow Lester [ Mrs. Alfred J. Lester ] of Americus, Georgia, had the cloth woven and this uniform made on her plantation during the Civil War. Lester enlisted as 4th corporal in Company C, 10th Georgia Infantry Battalion at the age of 21 in March 1862. He was the only surviving child of his parents, and died of disease in a Richmond hospital in March 1863. Following his death, his remains and personal belongings, including this uniform were shipped to his mother.
