Provenance The bit was taken from a riderless Confederate horse during the battle at Trevilian's Station, June 11, 1864 by Private L. V. Dix, Co. I, 6th New York Cavalry, dispatch courier at General Philip Sheridan's headquarters. Private Dix used the bit until his enlistment expired August 4, 1864.
