Description Adult dress of brown checkered pattern silk, with cotton lining inside. Has a gathered bodice, a rounded jewel neckline and gathered sleeves. Brown braid on bottom of skirt. Net and lace featherstitched scarf (or cape). There are six (6) buttons and two (2) eye and hooks at waist band. Sewn inside the waist band is "Mrs. Mary Fortners Mothers dress."

Provenance The dress was made and worn by Miss Sue Anderson to the Hickman County Fair in the fall of 1860. She became the wife of Capt. Ephraim A. Dean, CSA, after the war. Both lived and died and are buried in Hickman County. The dress was presented by its owner to Miss Mary Fortner, prominent educator and friend.
