Description Model 1860 U. S. Light Cavalry Saber: single-edged, curved blade with rounded back and rudimentary false edge and two fullers; ricasso stamped "US / C.E.W / 1864", reverse ricasso stamped "Mansfield & Lamb / Forestdale R.I."; brass hilt with a knuckle bow and two branches flowing from an oval guard and terminating at the pommel, pommel cap stamped "CEW"; wood grip with swell in the center covered in leather, twisted brass wire missing; metal scabbard with two suspension rings and large drag. With scabbard (.161a) and sword knot (.161b).

Provenance Paul Hamilton wore this sword and scabbard when he served as Asst. Adj. Gen. to Lt. Gen. Wade Hampton and as Aide-de-Camp and/or Asst. Adj. Gen. to Lt. Gen Stephen D. Lee during the war. He was killed near Vicksburg during the Battle of Chickasaw Bayou / Walnut Hills on December 29, 1862; this was the opening battle of the Vicksburg Campaign.
