Description Adult nightgown in a plain weave, white cotton, with a lining also of plain weave, white cotton. The lining's fabric is coarser than that of the outer fabric. The neckline is at the base of the natural neck with a front opening and no closure. The neckline forms a collar, yoked in back. The back yoke hangs down abour four inches. The collar is edged all around with a 1.625" ruffle of tight gathers. The ruffle hem is one-eighth inch, with tiny stitches very carefully executed. The ruffle/ neckline seam is finished in a whip stitch. The front opening extends down fourteen inches from the neckline. The opening is lined with a one-inch tightly gathered ruffle from neckline to bodice waist. There is no ruffle on the opening below the waist. The waistline is empire and horizontal, gathered loosely. Two front darts, 2.25 inches long, run from waistline up to the fullest part of bust. The front waistline is closed by two one-inch wide ties which are attached at the center front and do not extend around waist. The front opening below waist is closed by a single, half-inch button. The button is covered by the same fabric as nightgown. The button base is an unknown material. The button hole is hand-stitched. The bottom of front opening is placketed. The sleeves are wrist length, straight with a quarter-inch hem, gathered only on top of armscye, and cuff-less. The shoulder seams are set back about 1.5 inches from the natural shoulder top. The bodice side seams are located at the natural side. The skirt is bell-shaped, full to the floor and has a half-inch hem. The side seams go to the back of the skirt. Two bands of decorative stitches are around the skirt bottom, 4.5 inches from hem. The bands consist of three one-eighth inch rows of hand-run tucks. The tucks are a quarter-inch apart. The nightgown back neckline is dipped and gathered tightly between shoulder seams. The bodice back has side seams extending from back of armscye to waist. They intersect the armscye between the shoulder and side center back. The back waistline is gathered by two half-inch ties. The ties run through a casing which is sewn into the back side seams. The skirt side seams are about two inches toward the back of natural side seams. The back skirt waistline is tightly gathered between side seams. A pleat extends from the center back waistline down 8.5 inches. There is no center back seam. The nightgown is lined on bodice back from shoulder seams down to waist following side back seams and extending over to side seams. Pieces were first basted to outer pieces then sewn all together. The edges are whip-stitched together. In general, the workmanship on this garment is excellent.
