Pvt. Joseph A. Jones captured this sword and scabbard from an unnamed captain of the 5th Massachusetts Infantry during the Second Battle of Manassas.
Or, according to a 1907 letter in accession file, "The keys and sword were taken from Federal officers who escaped from Libby Prison. They were taken by a private soldier...who was a member of Co. D, 1st Louisiana Infantry, and then a guard at Libby Prison. The exact date he could not give me but it was after the battles on the Chickahominy."
