The badge consists of four parts - bar pin, ribbon, suspension bar, and pendant. The brass bar pin is shaped liked a plain rectangle and contains "VETERAN" in raised letters. A silk ribbon with no markings passes through a ribbon bar at the bottom of the bar pin. The silk ribbon consists of a single red vertical stripe, single white vertical stripe, and a single blue vertical stripe. The bottom of the ribbon passes through a ribbon bar at the top of a brass suspension bar. The suspension bar is also shaped like a plain brass rectangle but contains "WASHINGTON ARTILLERY" is raised letters. A set of tiny interconnecting rings and loops links the bar to the brass oval shaped pendant. A three dimensional roaring tiger's head is in the center of the pendant. A raised laurel wreath surround the head. An eagle with outspread wings sits on top of the wreath. Two crossed cannons are placed behind the lion and wreath. "TRY US" is printed in raised letters above the wreath's bow. The silk of the ribbon is worn in places. The back of the badge rests against the backing of the frame and is therefore, not visible. The badge is located in the upper left quadrant of the frame.
