Description Oil on canvas portrait painting of Jefferson Davis in standing three-quarters pose. Davis' right hand is resting on a book on a table and his left hand is at his waist. The portrait is signed in the front lower right with the date and location of its execution: "J.A Elder / Virginia / Beauvoir / (Miss.) / 1887". Possibly painted from life.

Provenance Portrait of Jefferson Davis painted at Beauvoir, Mississippi, by John Adams Elder of Richmond, Virginia, from life in 1887. A label removed during a restoration in 1965 is in the library. The label reads: "To Maj. Jno. A. Elder - My Dear Sir - I am very respectfully and truly yours - Jefferson Davis - Beauvoir Miss. 2nd March 1887." The portrait was purchased shortly after Davis's death by William Mitchell, the donor. For years it hung in the Westmoreland Club.
