Provenance Knife used by Samuel Frederick Venable, son of Abram Watkins Venable, a member of the Confederate Congress, Captain of Engineers on the staff of Brigadier General Lucius Eugene Polk. He was taken prisoner at Atlanta, Georgia and he and another man used this knife to cut themselves out of a box car near Dalton, Georgia, and escape in the night.
