Provenance The coin is an 1855 United States five-dollar piece. Coins with one side smoothed off and engraved were popular gifts in 19th century. They were most often given as tokens of affection and known today, therefore, as "love tokens." These coins were made into brooches, bangles, watch fobs, etc., or simply carried as pocket pieces. Coin denominations most often used for "love tokens" were dimes and quarters.
