Provenance Col. Archibald Hopkins, Union officer, captured this sword and scabbard from a Confederate officer during the Battle at Sayler's Creek. He wrote a letter home to his mother which stated, "Gen. Custis Lee, son of Gen. Robert E. Lee commanded and surrendered to David White, Company E, 37th Massachusetts [Infantry] and I shall bring home a sword and belt which a Major surrendered to me personally. The troops we fought had never been beaten before and part of them from a Naval Brigade they were splendidly dressed, armed and equipped, and many officers broke their swords rather than surrender them - splendid English arms."
