Object Name Vest
Catalog Number 0985.07.00105b
Description Child's vest of off-white wool with five button front with Navy buttons "*EXTRA*TREBLE"; no collar or pockets; brass four hole waist buttons with backmark "HYAM & CO. / 66 & 67 OXFORD St."
Dimensions W-13.5 L-16 inches
Owned Jefferson Davis, Jr. (tentative)
Made Varina Howell Davis, CSA ; Hyam and Company\Button maker
Provenance Believed to be part of a major's suit of Confederate gray worn by Jefferson Davis Jr., the eldest son of the Jefferson and Varina Davis. This suit was made for him by Mrs. Davis in 1864, and worn during the Civil War.

[Vest's association with uniform 0985.7.151 is based upon comparable size -- too large for other two Davis children uniforms. Formerly said to be part of "Zouave uniform worn by Jefferson Davis, Jr., son of President Davis, during the war." However, it is now believed that this vest was mistakenly associated with the Zouave uniform by previous curators (the vest is a different size, and very different style, from the Zouave uniform). As the uniforms were not described or itemized at time of donation, this is ultimately unknown. It is also unknown if this vest was actually worn by one of the Davis boys, or even among the items donated by Mrs. Davis.]
