Provenance This haversack was taken from a Federal battery by J. D. McCartney, Bryan's Battery at Cedar Creek, October 19, 1864.

Haversacks of this type were used by the No. 4 gunner to pass ammunition to the gunner from the limber chest. In theory, this was to preclude the accidental ignition of the powder.
