Provenance This pair of spurs was made from brass off the rail of the "USS Keokuk." The spurs were given in memory of Samuel Prioleau Ravenel Jr., whose father, Samuel Prioleau Ravenel, commanded the shore battery (1st South Carolina Artillery), which sank the "Keokuk" in Charleston harbor, on April 7, 1863.
