Provenance Lt. Gen. Thomas J. Jackson presented this sword and scabbard to Narcissus F. Quarles for gallantry shown in the Battle of Cedar Mountain on August 9, 1862. Quarles captured nineteen prisoners and three colors. He was a member of Co. E, 5th Virginia Infantry. Judge J. W. Quarles had an inscription engraved on the sword to preserve its identity.
