Brig. General Bradley Tyler Johnson owned this sword and scabbard during the war. Lt. Gen. Wade Hampton gave the sword and scabbard to him in March 1864 with the credit for saving Richmond from Union Gen. Kilpatrick's attack (February 28 - March 2, 1864).
The sword clip attached to the hangers was given to Gen. Johnson by Gen. J.E.B. Stuart in 1863. Stuart invented it when a lieutenant in the U.S. Cavalry prior to the war, and Secretary Floyd gave him $5,000 for the patent for the use of the U.S. Cavalry.
