Description Uniform frock coat: double breasted, 7 buttons in each row, cadet gray wool broadcloth with red wool piping, no facings, brown wool and silk lining in the body, off-white cotton muslin lining in sleeves; embroidered gold major's collar insignia edged in red, gold sleeve braid, Federal navy buttons with backmarks: "HORTMANN BROS/& ALLIEN." and "H. BROS./& ALLIEN."

Provenance Major Edward Cunnigham served throughout the war in several theaters as an aide to Lt. Gen. Edmund Kirby Smith. In May 1864, Smith appointed Cunningham as chief of artillery for Smith's Department of Trans-Mississippi.
