|Provenance||Hat made for Robert E. Lee by an unknown lady. The donor, Mr. Beverly R. Codwise, does not think Lee ever wore the hat. It was kept by Mrs. Peyton Grimes for many years. Given to Mr. Codwise by Lee on the Plank Road near Orange Court House, Virginia, in February or March 1864. Codwise was the 1st Sergeant, Company C, 39th Battalion Virginia Cavalry.|
