Object Name Ribbon, Commemorative
Catalog Number 0985.07.00135b
Date ca. 1893
Description The ribbon commemorates the event of Jefferson Davis' re-interment at Hollywood Cemetery in 1893. The ribbon consists of four parts: bar pin, ribbon, metal pendant, and connecting bar. The bar pin is brass and is rectangular shaped with an ornamental scroll work crest on top. "SOUVENIR" is printed in raised letters on the base. The ribbon hangs from the bar pin and is made of silk. The ribbon has one black vertical stripe (left side) and one white vertical stripe (right side) with gold lettering printed on both sides. Lettering on the ribbon reads, "RE-INTERRED / MAY 31ST, / 1893 / RICHMOND, VA." The bottom of the ribbon threads through a small metal oblong ring which connects to the pendant. The pendant contains a relief bust portrait of Jefferson Davis and has beveled trim around the edge. "JEFFERSON" is printed in raised letters to the left of the portrait, and "DAVIS" is printed in raised letters to the right of the portrait. The back of the ribbon rests against the backing of the frame and is therefore, not visible. This commemorative ribbon is part of a large framed collection (0985.7.135); the rest of the collection is enumerated separately (0985.7.135a, 0985.7.135c-0985.7.135hh).
