Event wounding, death and burial of Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson, 1863
Provenance The pressed flowers came from two coffins: one from that of Brig. Gen. Maxcy Gregg, who died on December 15, 1862 from wounds in his side and spine received on December 13 at the Battle of Fredericksburg and the other from that of Lt. Gen. Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson, who died on May 10, 1863 after being wounded by his own men on May 1, then getting pneumonia, at Chancellorsville. Both of the bodies lay in state at the Virginia State Capitol for viewing before being sent home to be buried, Gregg to Columbia, South Carolina, and Jackson, to Lexington, Virginia.
