Object Name Medal, Commemorative

Description The medal is a copper disc. The obverse has a relief image of the recumbent Robert E. Lee Monument in the center. "BORN JANY 19TH 1807" is printed in raised letters along the upper edge of the medal. "DIED OCT 12TH 1870" is printed along the bottom edge of the medal. The reverse has laurel wreath in relief around the perimeter. The center has the following printed in raised letters, "IN MEMORIAM / UNVEILING STATUE OF / GEN. R. E. LEE / LEXINGTON, VA. / JUNE 28TH 1883." The medal came in a black leatherette case (217b) with a brass clip closure and lined with black velvet; the center section has a cut-out to hold the medal. The case did have an attached paper tag with the accession number, but the tag is no longer attached. A paper label is adhered to the inside cover of the case and has the following printed in black, "The / Mary De Renne / Confederate Collection."
