Event Evacuation of Richmond, April 2-3, 1865
Provenance This piece of canvas was part of a Confederate tent. It was among other old tents thrown upon Mrs. R. Garcin's farm gate in Powhatan Court House on the day of the Army of Northern Virginia's evacuation (from the city of Richmond). As the wagons were driven hastily by, the occupants threw many things away to lighten their loads. Mrs. Garcin had the best old tent cut up into washstand covers, well washed, and in time they got bleached.
