Provenance This pair of trousers was made from cow's hair by Amelia Barlow Lester [ Mrs. Alfred J. Lester ] of Americus, Georgia, during the Civil War. They belonged to her son, Sgt. John Westley Lester. Lester enlisted as 4th corporal in Company C, 10th Georgia Infantry Battalion at the age of 21 in March 1862. He was the only surviving child of his parents, and died of disease in a Richmond hospital in March 1863. Following his death, his remains and personal belongings (which may have included these pants), were shipped to his mother.
