Provenance Butter knife from the ship's mess of the CSS Jamestown of the James River Squadron, C.S.N. (Yorktown, Teaser, Virginia-Merrimac). The Jamestown accompanied the "Virginia" in its first engagements with the Monitor in 1862. The knife was in the possession of the Paymasters General, James Semple of both the Merrimac and the Jamestown.
