He enlisted in Co. K, 6th Virginia Cavalry on July 15, 1861. He was appointed Assistant Surgeon (with the rank of captain) to the 1st Virginia Cavalry on September 13, 1861. He was subsequently assigned to the 2nd Virginia Cavalry, 8th Virginia Infantry, and 3rd Mississippi Cavalry. He was also stationed at hospitals in Staunton, Richmond, Leesburg, and Lynchburg, Virginia. Oden was promoted to Surgeon on November 26, 1862. He retired from service on May 28, 1864 due to "phthisis pulmonalis."
