Description Field glasses case; cardboard covered with black leather. Written on the lid of the case is, "W. R. Cox / 2nd N. C. S. T./ July 24, 1861". Lid attached with two metal hinges; closes with metal clasp. Lined with red silk. For field glasses (.147).

Provenance This is the case that held the field glasses that Brig. Gen. William Ruffin Cox wore, "in a brief but violent engagement in the retreat from Petersburg, Virginia, just a few days before the surrender at Appomattox Courthouse." The field glasses were punctured by a bullet in the left lens, which "probably saved the General's life."
