Description Half-plate tintype with applied color; man in civilian dress, bust portrait, posed slightly to viewer's left, looking past camera up and to the right, receding hairline, hair parted on side and swept back, cut at earlobe length, full beard, no moustache, cheeks and lips tinted pink, white standing shirt collar visible, dark horizontal necktie wrapped around neck and tied in a bow in front, starched white shirt front, dark coat with wide, notched lapels; oval gilt mat embossed with floral and spandrel motif; preserver stamped with scroll design; case is leather-covered wood; obverse and reverse case sections are mismatched, and attached with black cloth tape; exterior obverse sections embossed with central medallion, liar and scroll around edges; reverse exterior is embossed with grape cluster surrounded with foliate scroll; inner case edged in gilt, maroon velvet door pad, embossed with central medallion and scrolled foliate motif, brass latches and latch hooks intact;
