Description Quarter-plate tintype, cut to carte-de-visite size; copy photography, possibly of a carte de visite, postmortem of a woman, lying on bed or flat surface, camera angle 3/4 diagonal to the left, pillows behind head, curly hair swept back from face and gathered under head, eyes shut, lace collar with flowers on top of breast, loose wrap with buttons running in diagonal from collar visible at right, white sheet pulled up and folded back at waist; oval tintype mounted on matte with oval opening, stylized scrollwork at corners;

Provenance Postmortem photograph of Virginia Belle Burnett Smith (Mrs. Benjamin J. Smith) was born in Hanover County, Virginia, ca. 1847 and died in Richmond, Virginia in 1872. The photograph came into the collection along with a letter written by her husband Benjamin J. Smith, recounting to her sister her final moments: "Oh that I could tell you but half of those sweet words she spoke. If I had the tounge [sic] of an Angel I would fail to express her dying murmurs."
