Description Sixth-plate daguerreotype, studio portrait of a man, seated, 3/4 pose, facing viewer's left, hair parted, combed back; clean shaven; wearing civilian coat, over waistcoat, buttoned, over shirt, wide necktie/cravat; high standing collar; mat is gold, oval, with scroll pattern stamped around edge; preserver has foliate pattern, case is wood-covered leather, and has embossed medallion of peacock on branch with large leaves and berries, surrounded by scroll and foliate pattern; outter and inner edges of case have gilded filigree detail; inside cover is lined with faded brown [?] velvet; with embossed eagle holding a baner that reads, "J. H. Whitehurst Galleries" over lettering: "New-York Washington D.C. Baltimore Norfolk Petersburg & Lynchburg;" label adhered to inside front cover reads, "Age 21"
