Silver cup with flat sided handle. An etched medallion in the center contains the engraving: "Prisoners at Johnson's Island to Dr. L.E. Locke 1865." Inscribed "DUHME" (St. Louis) on the bottom.

This is a piece of cotton (.15); previously encased in frame behind glass with a geranium leaf (.15a). It was removed from the frame in October of 1987.

Gutta percha chain with small round links and two small ornaments attached. One is a fish carved from a shell and the other is an elongated tear drop shape made of shell and gutta percha.

Chain: gutta-percha chain (.115a) consisting of forty-six oval links with a cross pendant. Part of a set of jewelry consisting of four different pieces, each made of gutta-percha. The set is presented in a glass domed case; the dome is broken into three pieces but still fits together on the presentation base. All pieces of jewelry are sewn onto a red faded upholstery type fabric. The old Museum label "323" is on top of the dome.

Part of a set of jewelry consisting of four different pieces, each made of gutta-percha. CANDLESTICK -

The candlestick is carved from wood and has a rounded base with a curving upward stem to the neck. Carved thin bands are around the neck. A portion of the lip is broken. A handwritten history is located in two places.

Epaulet -

Epaulet : One of a pair of epaulets (.4.32a-b) made of gold thread braid shoulder boards with Kentucky State Seal cuff buttons at each shoulder, black velvet pads with gold thread letters "BGG" applied to the surface, and black cotton liners with brass fittings.

Wooden box with a sliding lid (.61b). Carved on the lid of the box: "J.W. Bowles. / Johnson's Is'l. O. / 1865". Each side of the box is decorated with painted flowers, leaves, and the top features a compass. Used to hold chess pieces (.61b-hh).

BOX -

The octagonal box is small, carved from wood, with removable lid. The Louisiana State coat-of-arms is carved on the top. A Latin cross is inset on the side front; appears to be shell.

Piece, Chess -

Chess piece: Dark (red) colored wooden pawn. Circular hole in base indicates it was turned, and the piece is highly polished. Consists of a slight concave bottom with a flat base with rounded shoulder leading up into a smooth neck. The neck is topped with a slightly elongated bulb on top of a flared collar. On the bottom is handwritten in black ink "W. Thomason / Caldonia, Tenn." along the outer edge. Part of a thirty-one chess pieces (missing one rook), carved from wood, stained and polished. The names and hometowns of various men are written on the bottom of each piece. The are contained in a tobacco box (184a).
