Ninth-plate tintype; bust portrait, in uniform, head facing 3/4 to the left, looking past camera to the left, hair parted on side, beard and moustache, standing collar on frock coat, three-star insignia visible on collar; double-breasted coat buttoned, three buttons visible; non-pareil gilt metal mat embossed in floral motif; preserver stamped with simple scroll; case is leather-covered wood embossed on obverse and reverse exterior case sections embossed with medallion and scroll pattern; interior obverse case lined with red velevet, embossed with medallion; Tintype appears to be a photograph of a photograph, the original of which probably had hand-applied coloring.
