KNIFE -

The long knife has a wooden shellacked grip with a spear-shaped point on the blade. The blade has a cannel or rolled edge (terms found in Peterson's "American Knives"). The guard is "S" shaped.

Shell, Artillery -

Projectile: 8 inch spherical ordinance shell. Has a .75 inch diameter hole; probably for a fuse.

Binnacle -

Binnacle / compass: dry card compass, with a 4 1/25" diameter brass bowl in a gimbal ring mounted in a wood box. The card has a fancy fleur-de-lis at the north point over an ornate circular design. It is signed at the bottom of the "pointer" and around the center * ROBERT MERRILL * NEW YORK *. The card is divided into eight Cardinal Points, each of 45 degrees, and then into 1/8 and 1/16th points. Each point subtends an arc of 11 1/4 degrees comprising in total 360 degrees of the compass. The wooden box is made of with dove tail sides and sliding cover (now missing).

Model 1841 U. S. Naval Officer's Sword; slightly curved blade with quill back and false edge, etched with floral sprays, eagle, "United States Navy" and "N.P. Ames / Cutler / Springfield"; bone grip with incised lines, banded ferrule, backstrap terminates in eagle's head pommel, knuckle bow pierced for sword knot, acorn tipped quillon, hinged guards, obverse guard missing, reverse guard plain, all brass parts gilded. No scabbard.

Model 1841 U. S. Naval Officer's Sword; slightly curved blade with quill back and false edge, etched with floral sprays, eagle, "United States Navy" and "N.P. Ames / Cutler / Springfield"; bone grip with incised lines, banded ferrule, backstrap terminates in eagle's head pommel, knuckle bow pierced for sword knot, acorn tipped quillons, hinged guards, obverse guard cast with raised oak leaf spray, reverse guard plain with inscribed initials "T J B", all brass parts gilded. No scabbard.

Model 1852 U. S. Naval Officer's Sword:slightly curved, single-edged blade with two fullers, etched with oak leaf sprays, fouled anchor, military trophies,eagle, scroll with "USN" and engraved "H. Horstmann / & Sons / Philadelphia"; knight's head stamped on reverse ricasso; wood grip covered in shagreen and wound in twisted wire (most of wire wrap missing), pommel cap decorated with raised eagle surrounded by stars, knuckle bow broken, guard decorated with pierced design of oak leak spray and scroll with "USN"; dolphin's head quillon. Leather scabbard (.3700b) with brass mounts, knotted rope design hold suspension rings, drag cast in the form of a stylized dolphin/sea serpent, scroll applied

Leather scabbard with brass mounts, knotted rope design hold suspension rings, drag cast in the form of a stylized dolphin/sea serpent, scroll applied into reverse throat "Horstmann / & / Sons / Makers / Philada". For sword (.3700a).
