Letter: Braxton Bragg to Colonel Benjamin S. Ewell, January 14, 1863 Physical Appearance: January 14, 1863 - Braxton Bragg at Tullahoma, [Tennessee], to Col[onel] Benjamin S. Ewell, Chattanooga, [Tennessee] - Gives a more complete reply to the Colonel's "private dispatch of yesterday." Concerns a rumor that Bragg "would apply to be relieved from army." Comments that "some of these officers did not meet my expectations and to their shortcomings I am indebted for the failures of Wednesday evening and Friday evening. on the enemy's left flank." States that if he retired temporarily "there is no man here to command an army. The one who aspires to it is a good drill master but no more . . ."

WALLET -

The wallet is black leather with double fold flaps and four accordion pockets. One pocket contains the paper portion of a cartridge. The wallet is associated with a souvenir lock of hair (0985.3.105).

Souvenir -

The souvenir consists of a lock of red-blonde hair in a white paper envelope. The outside of the envelope contains the following inscription, "E. H. Hall died, Jan 1st 1863, Murfreesboro, Hair stained with blood." The lock of hair is associated with a leather wallet (0985.3.104).

BELT -

Brown leather belt with iron roller buckle and black leather bayonet frog converted to flagstaff holder. Faint remnants of painted stencil visible on front of belt, upside down: "55 B ..."

Belt, Flag -

This is a double loop leather sling for the butt end of a flag pole. It is attached to belt (see record 0985.3.107).

INSIGNIA -

The insignia consists of a gold thread wreath surrounding the number "10," applied to a piece of blue wool. Two sides have cotton hem stitches.

SASH -

Sash of red silk mesh with red thread tassels at each end.

Screw thread top inkwell with a squat cylindrical base.

SASH -

Sash of green worsted wool without tassels. Green indicates a medical officer's sash. Associated with buttons (.109a-e).

Pair (one of two) brass spur with flat heel band and applied straight neck with horizontally mounted 27-point rowels; leather instep and arch strap attached to single studs at terminal ends of heel band; heel band engraved "Capt. Irving A. Buck A.A.G. C.S.A.," and "Murfreesboro Dec. 31, 1862."

Material: wood; dark, almost black. Shape: round. Markings/appearance: Banner style staff; may be postwar. An area of cloth pieces ranging in size from 1 3/4" to 3 1/2" in length and each about 1/2" wide are attached one side by 33 tacks. Finial: wooden ball or wooden acorn; modified ball. Ferrule: wooden ball; modified ball.
