Letter from Gilbert Moxley Sorrel to Mrs. Jacob Prosser Harrison, June 4, 1896 Physical Appearance: June 4, 1896 - G[ilbert] M[oxley] Sorrel at New York, New York, to Mrs. J[acob] Prosser Harrison, Vice Regent for Georgia, Confederate Memorial Literary Society, Richmond, V[irgini]a - States that he is sending his sword "brought out of the great war" to be placed in the Georgia Room. He notes "it is a bit of pain to part with this old companion but a Georgian myself, and once commanding Georgia troops in the Army of Northern Virginia, sucha request should be willingly complied with." Provides background on his procuring the sword at Chickamauga. Signed, "G. M. Sorrel" 2 pp. on 1 sheet

Presentation Sword with Lion's Head Pommel; curved, single-edge blade etched with floral sprays, stand of arms, "L. Haiman & Brother / GA": brass hilt with multiple branches flowing into knuckle bow. "CSA." set within wreath on guard, rosette quillon; lion's head pommel; shagreen covered grip wrapped with three-strand brass wire. Metal scabbard (.1a).

Uniform Frock coat: double breasted, 8 buttons in each row, steel gray wool broadcloth with light buff wool piping, no facings, dark green wool and silk lining in body, white cotton sheeting lining in sleeves; embroidered gold general's insignia backed in light buff twill, gold sleeve braid, Confederate staff buttons with CSA on shield, backmark: "RIVET'D & SOLDER'D" and "S. ISSACS CAMPBELL & CO./ST. JAMES. ST. LONDON"

This black silk pouch with blue silk fringe and tassels was used to hold tobacco. The pouch closes with a drawstring cord and there are triangular pieces of silk trimmed in the fringe on each side.

Confederate Cavalry Saber modelled after M1840 U.S. Heavy Cavalry Saber; curved single-edged blade; brass hilt of two branches and knuckle bow flowing from oval guard to pommel; leather wrapped grip wound with twisted wire. Metal scabbard (.83a).

The housewife consists of a green and natural blue striped cotton pocket with a triangular flap. A brass VMI Cadet button is attached on the inside. The housewife is edged with brown and red cotton.

Non-regulation South Carolina Militia Infantry Officer's sword: straight, single-edged blade with single fuller and etched with floral sprays, "WHH & S" on obverse, "Philadelphia" on reverse; grip of mother of pearl over wooden core with brass straps top and bottom and brass ferrule, pommel cast as female liberty figure in scale armor and Phrygian cap, flat knuckle bow with scroll end where it attaches to the pommel and decorated along length with stylized floral designs, guard decorated in relief with South Carolina State seal and scroll work, quillon terminates in eagle's head. Non-regulation U. S. Staff and Field Officer's Sword; slightly curved single-edged blade with two fullers etched with floral sprays, eagle, military trophies "U.S.", gilded brass hilt decorated with US eagle and shied, stand of flags, 12 five-pointed stars, pommel cap decorated with {mother of pearl?], forward end of pommel decorated with floral spray, top of pommel inset with mother of pearl oval carved with the letter "G", wooden grip covered in leather, wire wrap missing. Steel scabbard (.73b) with brass mounts; engraved on obverse scabbard between mounts "Lt. Col. O.C. Johnson 15th Wis Vols." reverse engraved "Taken at Chickamauga Sept. 20th 1863 / G.M. Musket ball: one round lead shot modified with a drilled shallow hole.

Wire -

Six wire filaments twisted and coated with a rubber substance (probably vulcanized rubber). The wire is exposed at each end and the rubber substance, believed gutta percha, is cracked and brittle.

TASSEL -

The tassel cord is a blue and white silk thread wound around a cotton filler with blue and gold twisted fringe. The tassel has a bound bobbin with gold thread under and a crossed pattern of braided blue threads.
