DOWLERS / SUPERIOR QUALITY" and "W. DOWLERS / SUPERIOR."

Field glasses case; cardboard covered with black leather. Written on the lid of the case is, "W. R. Cox / 2nd N. C. S. T./ July 24, 1861". Lid attached with two metal hinges; closes with metal clasp. Lined with red silk. For field glasses (.147).

Pattern: Army of Northern Virginia battle flag; fragment remaining; wool, cotton. Stars: One remaining (of believed original 13); white cotton, 5-pointed. Border: 1 1/2 inches white wool originally on 3 sides. Attachment: Eyelets. Unit Designation: None. Battle Honors: None. Stitching: Star is hand-stitched, rest of flag is machine-stitched.

Uniform frock coat: double breasted, 7 buttons on each row, cadet gray wool kersey with no facings or piping; brown, white, and black patterned cotton homespun lining in the body; brown cotton osnaburg lining in the sleeves; no collar insignia present; unusual single strand gold sleeve braid paralleling sleeve seam from wrist to elbow and forming a trefoil before returning to wrist and incorporating eleven small ball buttons. Although no collar insignia is present, a shadow of first lieutenant's bars may be seen, coat buttons are Federal staff buttons with backmark, "SUPERIOR QUALITY."

The lanyard is a twist-braided hemp rope with an iron hook on either end and a large knot in the center.

Uniform coat: single breasted, four button front, light brown (probably undyed) wool jean cloth, black collar facing, no piping, unbleached cotton osnaburg lining in body and sleeves, no insignia, and brown composition buttons, outside pocket on the left side. The sack coat is associated with a pair of pants (.340a).
