Cockade -

The secession badge is a green silk rosette with three small prickly cone (or pinecone) seed pods sewn to the center. The center rosette is created with silk ribbon sewn into odd knife pleats. Single remaining ribbon streamer below; evidence of one or two others, since broken off. Sewn to paper backing.

The secession badge is a red silk rosette with a North Carolina cuff button sewn to the center. The center rosette is created with silk ribbon sewn into knife pleats. Two streamer ribbons hang below; they are attached to the paper backing. Sewn to paper backing.

The secession badge consists of a coiled wire armature in the shape of three fan-shaped lobes with a stem; green silk thread is wound around the three lobes, and brown fabric is wrapped around the stem. It is believed to represent a palmetto tree (formerly described as a three-leaf shamrock).
