Notes He was shot through the heart during a charge near Nance's Shop in Charles City County. His brother Eugene, who served in the same company, found his body and buried it in a shallow grave. He went home and reported the death, and he and Cecil's widow Lina returned with a wagon and brought the body back to Bowling Green.

Uniform frock coat: double breasted, 7 buttons in each row, cadet gray wool kersey with buff wool broadcloth piping, no facings, light sky blue polished cotton lining in body, off-white muslin lining in sleeves, dark green wool and silk lining in skirt, gold braid second lieutenant's collar insignia, gold sleeve braid, and Federal staff buttons with backmarks, "SUPERIOR / QUALITY, ACKERMAN & MIXER EXTRA SUPERFINE / NEW YORK" and "STEELE & JOHNSON."

Royal blue wool broadcloth with off-white polished cotton twill inner facings, red satin trim on waistline, gold braid strip down the outer seams of each leg, bone and Japanned tin buttons. The pants are associated with a frock coat (.555) and vest (.555b).

Vest of light cadet gray wool and cotton cloth with stand up collar, three pockets; brown cotton sheeting back with cinch belt (no buckle), white cotton sheeting inner lining; nine button front with Federal staff buttons with backmarks, "HORSTMANN BROS. & CO, / PHIL."

The single black cotton knit glove has a full cuff with a blue velvet ribbon woven into the cuff stitchery. Cuff has two layers. The top layer is knit openwork. The second layer is tan and dark blue yarn knit in stockinette stitch. The blue ribbon runs through both layers.

Tobacco pouch: one side has black/white/gray plaid silk with dark brown dots; the opposite side has brown/white striped cotton fabric, possibly homespun. The pouch is lined with beige cotton. Red piped trim with enclosed drawstring.
