Scope & Content General Joseph E. Johnston to General Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard, March 20, 1865

Physical Appearance: March 20, 1865 (received 12 midnight) - Joseph Eggleston Johnston at Smithfield, [North Carolina], to General Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard - Informs Beauregard of Union army movements - 15th & 17th Corps from Fayetteville to Goldsboro and 14th & 20th Corps from Fayetteville to Averysboro. Johnston advises that they attacked the 14th and 20th at 3 P. M., capturing three guns after routing one of the Corps. Remarks that Union troops rallied after receiving fresh reinforcements but Confederate forces resisted without difficulty until dark. Notes that by morning the enemy is fully entrenched at his front. States that only skirmishing has occurred today. Requests that Beauregard pass this information along to the Governor. (Signed) J. E. Johnston.
