Scope & Content William Booth Taliaferro Papers: Special Orders and General Orders, 1862-1865

Physical Appearance: This folder of the William Booth Taliaferro Papers contains the following Special Orders and General Orders from 1862 through 1865:

a) March 10, 1862 - Richmond, V[irgini]a, [Special] Order - Appoints L[ieutenan]t W. B. Pendleton of the 23rd V[irgini]a R[egimen]t [Infantry] as Assistant Adjutant General on his staff. Signed, "Wm. B. Taliaferro" Brig[adier] Gen[era]l, P[rovisional] A[rmy], C[onfederate] S[tates].

b) September 4, 1862 - H[ead] Q[uarte]rs Army of Northern V[irgini]a, Leesburg, Gen[era]l Orders, No. [102] - Concerns reduction of transportation, conduct of the army in Maryland, and problems with stragglers. By order of Gen[era]l R[obert] E[dward] Lee. (Signed) R. H. Pendleton. "Official" copy., Signed, "W. N. Starke" A[ssistant] A[djutant] Gen[era]l.

c) October 1, 1862 - Special Orders, No. 276, I - H[ea]d Q[uarte]rs V[alley] Dis[tri]ct, By command of Maj[or] Gen[era]l [Thomas Jonathan] Jackson, signed by E[lisha] F[ranklin] Paxton, A[cting] A[ssistant] A[djutant] G[eneral], appoints Capt[ain] A. M. Garber, A[ssistant] Q[uarter] M[aster] as Acting Chief Q[uarter] M[aster].

d) October 12, 1862 - H[ea]d Q[uarte]rs Army of Northern V[irgini]a, General Orders, No. 117 - Calls for general court martial to convene on October 14, 1862 at Major General T[homas] J[onathan] Jackson's camp. Assigns specific officers to serve on the court. By command of Gen[era]l R[obert] E[dward] Lee. (Signed) A. P. Mason, A[ssistant] A[djutant] G[eneral]. "Official" copy. Signed, "A. S. Pendleton" A[ssistant] A[djutant] G[eneral].

e) October 13, 1862 - Head Quarters, Department [of] Northern Virginia, Special Orders, No. 218, [Extract, paragraph] IV - Removes Privates Lucius M. Estis and M. C. Luttrell from their respective details and orders them to report for duty with each's company, G and D respectively, of 4th Virginia Cavalry. By command of Gen[eral Robert Edward] Lee. Signed, "A. P. Mason" A[ssistant] A[djutant] General.

f) February 20, 1863 - [Extract] Special Orders, No. 43, XXIII - Adjutant & Inspector's General's Office, Richmond, [Virginia], By command of the Secretary of War, signed by Jno. [John] Withers, Ass[istan]t Adj[utan]t General, instructs Brig[adier] Gen[era]l W[illiam] B[ooth] Taliaferro to proceed to Charleston, South Carolina and report to General [Pierre] G[ustave] T[outant] Beauregard for duty.

g) February 20, 1863 - [Extract] Special Orders, No. 44, XXIII - Adjutant & Inspector's General's Office, Richmond, [Virginia], By command of the Secretary of War, signed by Jno. [John] Withers, Ass[istan]t Adj[utan]t General, instructs Brig[adier] Gen[era]l W[illiam] B[ooth] Taliaferro to proceed to Charleston, South Carolina and report to General [Pierre] G[ustave] T[outant] Beauregard for duty. Marked "Duplicate".

h) Photocopy of February 3, 1864 - General Orders, No. 15 - Head Quarters, Depa[rtmen]t [of] S[outh] C[arolina], G[eorgi]a and Fl[orid]a, By command of General [Pierre Gustave Toutant] Beauregard, (signed) Thomas Jordan, Chief of Staff, directs that Department transportation to be put in readiness condition for the field (photocopy, Confederate Imprint> P&W-1284, original transferred to Box 8 of Confederate Imprint Collection on April 13, 2006).

i) February 20, 1864 - [Extract] Special Orders, No. 49, IV - Head Quarters, Department of So[uth] Ca[rolina], G[eorgi]a, and Fl[orid]a, Charleston, S[outh] C[arolina], By command of General [Pierre Gustave Toutant] Beauregard, signed by Jno. [John] M[arshall Warwick] Otey, Assistant Adjutant-General, relieves Brig[adier] Gen[era]l [William Booth] Taliaferro from duty in the 7th Military District and to await special instructions, also places Brig[adier] Gen[era]l [Johnson] Hagood in command of the 7th Military District.

j) February 20, 1864 - [Extract] Special Orders, No. 49, V - Head-Quarters Department of S[outh] C[arolina], G[eorgi]a, and Fl[orid]a, Charleston, S[outh] C[arolina], By command of General [Pierre Gustave Toutant] Beauregard, signed by Jno. [John] M[arshall Warwick] Otey, A[ssistant] A[djutant] G[eneral], instructs Brig[adier] Gen[era]l W[illia]m B[ooth] Taliaferro to proceed to the District of East Florida, assume command of all Confederate States Troops in that section, and organize them as listed.

k) February 21, 1865 - [Special] Orders, No. [--] - H[ea]d Q[uarte]rs Dep[artmen]t S[outh] C[arolina], Geo[rgia] and Fl[orid]a, St. Stephens, [South Carolina], instructs Taliaferro to detail a unit to guard the railroad bridge over the Santee River and relieve the 18th South Carolina Militia (fragment).
