Physical Appearance: One of Two letters recommending Brigadier General Bushrod Rust Johnson for promotion to Major General, in May 1864: .1) May 21, 1864 - [Header, written] Confederate States of America, War Department, Richmond, [Virginia] - James A. Seddon, Secretary of War, to "His Excellency, Jefferson Davis, President &c." - Recommends Johnson for rank of Major General in the Provisional Army of the Confederate States, to rank from same date, and then be assigned to duty under General [Pierre Gustave Toutant] Beauregard. Signed "James A. Seddon," Secretary of War. 1 page. ** A piece of "Cairo and Vincennes Railway" stationery has been glued to the reverse of the letter (in an attempt to support the creases in the letter). {Note that a small, one paragraph newspaper clipping has been pasted onto the bottom portion of this letter. The clipping, from an unidentified newspaper, is an obituary notice for James A. Seddon.}
